We have detailed some of the difficulties of older women. But there is more. Many older women have learned much about the double whammy of sex and age discriminations and have a great deal to teach the young. Their experiences give us guide lines for combating prejudice and supporting older women in their efforts to find a satisfying life.
Older women today have unexplored potential in terms of personal expression. In addition to their increasingly good records of health and longevity, they do not have to struggle with the complicts between mothering and careers, which even with day care, often trouble younger women.
Older women by example could give younger women confidence to resists the mania to remain young, with the knowledge that a rich life can await them as they age. Young women and even the middle-aged are floundering for viable female models to follow. A considerable number of older women have forged unique positions for themselves in terms of identity, personal achievements, and even financial and political power,but they need to be located and made visible.
